'Red Hot' : new paintings by NEIL SHAWCROSS
The Pigyard Gallery shows 'Red Hots' - an exhibition of new paintings by Neil Shawcross RUA during the Wexford Festival Opera 2008.
This exciting exhibition by one of Ireland's leading living painters features 14 oils on canvas - all inspired by bottles and packaging, of which Shawcross has been a voracious magpie collector for many years.
Although much larger than life-size, the images are domestically-scaled in comparison to the 6-feet-plus canvases which sold out at Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast. Those he called his 'bottle portraits' as they echo the well-known portraits of Seamus Heaney, Francis Stuart, Terry Frost and others; tall white canvases isolating the subject (he has described it as theatrical, like a spotlit stage) in a controlled explosion of turpsy paint staining like watercolour, daubs of impasto oil and threads of graphic line passing through the work like an electrical current.
In portraiture the subject is paramount. Not only must the work represent the sitter but ideally, some insight into the personality may be revealed. Mass-produced packaging could not seem further from this. Yet Shawcross demonstrates that, ultimately, the 'portrait' is about neither sitter, nor bottle, nor about the artist, but about the making process and the work itself.

GRAINNE MACEY
This is a case of 'local girl makes good' as Grainne Macey (formerly Roche) returns to Wexford for a first solo show. Macey's strongly textured acrylics, scraped, scratched and layered until the image emerges from within.
We are always delighted to give an opportunity to someone who has talent and application (making it back-to-back 1st shows for the Pigard Gallery in 2008). If this exhibition is anything to go by, it could be a vintage year.... (go to page)
