Fr. John O'Brien is a consistent and very popular painter who exhibits annually during Wexford Opera Festival.
He works in oils with landscapes his chief subject, especially quiet rural corners of his native county Wexford and and panoramic views of Achill Island to which O'Brien makes an annual artistic pilgrimage. To these are added a selection of still-lifes and some paintings of an occasional Mediterranean visit to challenge and extend the palette.
In addition there are often one or two experimental works shown but these exercises inform his style only gradually. His is an academic and consistent style showing influence of artists such as Paul Henry and it has refined and become more economical and fluid over the 30 years O'Brien has shown in Wexford.
His practice of developing his theme often from only a small pencil or pen & ink sketch and a good memory for light and colour facilitates his simplification and distilling of his subject.
Fr. John O'Brien is also a musician and mathematician.
